MASSLIVE: Chicopee cannabis company Theory Wellness donates $45,000 to Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen to create mobile food pantry

A cannabis company is going to help Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen & Pantry volunteers meet a long-term goal of helping families who often don’t know where their next meal is coming from and have a hard time getting to the agency.

On Thursday, organization officials will unveil a mobile food pantry that will travel to places where they know there are people facing food insecurity.

The first year of the program is being funded entirely by Theory Wellness, which has made a $45,000 donation to the pantry.

“We are trying to bring the pantry to the community,” said Al Picard, one of the presidents of the pantry’s board of directors.

Theory Wellness, which also has cannabis dispensaries in Great Barrington and Bridgewater, operates a medical and recreational dispensary at 672 Fuller Road in Chicopee.

It opened in February 2020 with just recreational marijuana, closing less than a month later because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened on Memorial Day of that year and later also received a medical marijuana distribution license, said Thomas Winstanley, vice president of marketing.

After the business reopened and was financially stable, Winstanley said, he met with Mayor John L. Vieau to talk about what Theory Wellness could do to get involved in the city.
“We wanted to see where a company like ours could have an impact on the community,” Winstanley said.
