NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: When the smoke clears: How New York can do marijuana legalization right
“Following Gov. Cuomo’s 2020 State of the State address, cannabis enthusiasts across New York are breathing a sigh of relief. While his promise to legalize cannabis in the state may feel like deja vu, this time the governor seems more direct, conscious and committed — as he should be. Cuomo’s proposed multi-state coalition creates a network of accountability and a shared opportunity to move towards progress and prevent any first-to-market jockeying between Northeast states that are all poised to legalize in the near future.
Massachusetts was notably left out of the proposed coalition, which includes neighboring Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. But New York could learn a lot from our state’s successes and shortcomings on the journey through the repeal of cannabis prohibition.
Cuomo’s remarks came almost exactly one year after my company opened our first store for adult-use sales — the sixth recreational dispensary in Massachusetts.
Over the past year, as the closest recreational dispensary to New York City, we’ve served tens of thousands of residents from the five boroughs, as well as citizens from across New York State. It goes without saying that most adults who choose to use cannabis prefer to purchase lab-tested, safe products in a welcoming retail environment.
We’ve seen the challenges first hand with larger-scale legalization on the East Coast. As an independently owned and operated cannabis brand, we’ve watched as multi-state (and multinational) holding companies have joined the legalization fray, slowly at first. But now, they are becoming commonplace in the Commonwealth.
Without access to conventional financing, capital is always an obstacle; the cost-per-entry is exorbitant. The high-cost barriers to entry make it extremely prohibitive for most entrepreneurs, while welcoming well-funded operations. The results thus can be the creation of a homogenized industry led by businessmen whom never had skin in the game, and never personally were negatively affected by the war on drugs…”
