Spring Starts Here:
How to Prep Cannabis Seeds for a Strong Growing Season

The first day of Spring is about new beginnings: Longer days. Warmer Soil. Fresh Starts. For hobbyist cannabis growers, it marks the beginning of the outdoor cultivation season.

Whether you’re planting your first cannabis seeds, or you’re a seasoned cultivator ready to another year in the garden, how you prepare your seeds can make a huge difference in germination rates, plant health, and ultimately your harvest this fall.

This guide kicks off our Grow-At-Home Series, which will help guide you through the process of growing top-tier cannabis at home! This month, we’ll be discussing how to properly prep your seeds before planting.

A little care at the seed stage sets the tone for everything that follows: stronger plants, healthier growth, and a more rewarding harvest months from now.

Why Seed Prep Matters

A cannabis seed contains everything it needs to grow into a mature plant. The right conditions and nutrients will help to ensure the seed take to the soil around it and thrive in its environment.

  • Improve germination success rates
  • Speed up sprouting time
  • Reduces the risk of mold or rot
  • Give seedlings a stronger start

Just like spring gradually unfolds around us, the goal is to slowly prep your seeds for a gentle and intentional transition to its final environment.

1. Start with Quality Seeds

Great plants start with great genetics. Theory Wellness is proud to offer a variety of quality genetics for you to jumpstart your garden.

2. Choose a Germination Method (Or Don’t!)

Many growers support germinating cannabis seeds before planting them. Though methods may differ from hobbyist-to-hobbyist, the general consensus is to maintain consistent moisture, warmth, and darkness.

A common method you may choose is the Paper Towel Method.

  • Lightly dampen a paper towel with clean water.
  • Place your seeds inside the paper towel.
  • Put the paper towel inside a plate or container and cover it to maintain humidity.
  • Store in a warm, dark location
  • In approximately 24-72 hours, the seed should begin to crack and unveil a small, white, taproot.
  • Once the taproot reaches ¼-½ inch length, the seed is ready to be planted.

More casual growers may choose to skip this step entirely and go direct-to-soil. This method reduces handling of delicate taproot sprouts, but may take longer to take root in the soil.

3. Maintain the Right Environment

Seeds are sensitive to their surroundings. The ideal germination environment is a warm (70-80° F,) moderate-to-high humidity, and dark place. It is important to avoid placing your germinating seeds near cold windows, air vents, or direct sunlight.

The more consistent your germination environment, the more consistent your outcomes will be!

4. Handle Your Seed Sprouts Carefully

Once your taproot has cracked through the seed wall, your plant is officially alive! During this stage, your plant is at its most delicate stage. It is important to be cautious when handling germinating seeds, and it is recommended to use clean hands. , and handle the seed shell not the taproot itself.

When transplanting the taproot to soil, handle the seed shell, not the taproot itself. When placing the taproot in soil, place the sprouted root downwards, and cover lightly with soil.

5. Do Not Over-Water Your Seeds

A common mistake made by hobbyist growers is over watering their seeds. Once planted, the seed will need oxygen as much as water to begin to thrive.

  • Keep your soil slightly moist
  • Avoid water puddling or soaked soil
  • Use a spray bottle for gentle water as it begins to sprout from the soil.
